Baptism By Fire

Lately I've met with several young singers with dreams of becoming recording artists. Of course, they are wanting to know what do to in order to chase that dream. Unfortunately, it's rare to have someone in your hometown that understands the music business and knows how to guide you toward the goal of becoming a successful musician and recording artist.

In my humble opinion, there is nothing more valuable to a young performer than performing. Having experience in front of an audience invaluable. It helps you discover not only how to read an audience and please them, but it helps you discover yourself, and who you are as an artist. What styles/songs do you sound the best on? What styles/songs do you enjoy performing?

This also helps you build a catalog of songs that you know and can perform. Having this is a tremendous tool for when you need to perform for somebody and showcase your talent. It can also come in handy if you need to get a gig to make some money. Learn as many songs as you can. Know your keys!

I can hear your concern though, "But Scotty, how do I get performing opportunities in my tiny little town?" This is your challenge. There are musicians everywhere. You'll just have to research who's playing music in your area or surrounding areas. Try to find those with similar styles to what you're wanting to do, but learning and getting experience with multiple styles is never a bad thing. Find a guitar player or piano player to do some singing with. Find a small club that may not have live music yet, or has nights without entertainment, and work something out so you can come in one day a month and play a couple hours for tips. Sometimes you'll have to get creative to find your outlet, but it's important.

I just figured I'd post this since it seemed to be a common conversation for me lately. Hope this helps!

Tom T. Hall Birthday Celebration & "I Love" Album Release

What a magical night. What an absolute honor. Last evening, Red Beet Records and the Country Music Hall of Fame hosted an album release of a re-make of Tom T. Hall's 1970's childrens music.
The new album "I Love: The Songs from Fox Hollow", produced by Eric Brace and Peter Cooper, is a celebration of the wonderful songs from years ago. The new recordings boast performances by Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, Tommy Cash, Lloyd Green, Duane Eddy, Lim Lauderdale, Bobby Bare, and many more. And all were on hand last night to perform these wonderful songs at The Country Music Hall of Fame's Ford Theatre.
Scotty Huff was invited to supplement the band on trumpet. "Man, what an honor to stand beside Duane Eddy and Lloyd Green, and listen to their amazing tone and musicality. And they must be the nicest guys in the word," shared Huff.
Tom T. was there with his wife "Miss Dixie." His performances were as magnificent as you would imagine a country legend would deliver.
After the show, all enjoyed some cake in celebration of Tom T.'s 75th birthday.

Scotty Huff's Children's Music Pet Peeve

Ok, enough! I can't stand it! Can somebody explain to me why children's educational programming, especially those that have a musical focus, cannot seem to follow a few basic and simple rules when providing music to children?

This pet peeve of mine started when my son was a baby and we purchased the "Baby Mozart" CD and DVD from the Baby Einstein series. Now, you'd think that if these people were really trying to positively influence the youth of the world with early exposure to classic music, they would introduce them to REAL INSTRUMENTS! I was shocked to hear synthesized instruments on the recordings. Was the budget really too high to hire musicians to actually play string instruments, or a real trombone? Even if there was a small budget at first, once Disney bought them out, could they not do a second release with real instruments to ensure our youngsters were exposed to real sounds?

We don't watch a ton of television in my house, but when we do watch kids programming, I'm usually baffled at the poor quality of songs and music production that is intended to foster learning in our children. Often, the lyrics are too complicated or are moving too quickly for the given age group, the vocal parts are mixed way too quietly for anyone to understand, and it often sounds like they saved money by having the songwriter sing the track instead of hiring a professional vocalist that understands how to deliver a song for children. "The Wiggles", a children's programming phenomenon back in the day, was a perfect example of, "What the heck are they saying/singing about?" I've worked with people from Australia and have no issues understanding their accents and colloquialisms, and I still couldn't understand half of what they were saying or singing about.

Music education is an EXTREMELY important part of a child's development, from birth throughout their school years... and beyond! The educational benefits of music is well documented. I'm not saying it has to be corny. It can be a lot of fun, exciting, modern, AND effectively educational. This is not difficult.

If your producing a children's show and you're not sure how to implement what I'm talking about, let me help you. It's not as hard as you may think. It's not as time consuming as you may think. It's not as expensive as you may think. (Wow, this is sounding like an advertisement all of a sudden!) But seriously, I can help! Operation: Sound Off! Artists Will Perform To Support The Ride2Recovery Natchez Trace Cyclefest Kickoff

Operation: Sound Off! (OSO) has been sought after to help organize a kick off party for the Ride2Recovery (R2R) Natchez Trace Cyclefest. Ride2Recovery (www.ride2recovery.com) is a military charity which supports Spinning® Recovery Labs and outdoor cycling programs at Military and VA locations around the U.S. to help injured veterans overcome obstacles they face. This Saturday, April 9th, R2R will be hosting a bicycle ride of the Natchez Trace Parkway for this worthy cause.

Friday evening, April 8th, OSO will host a kick off party for the R2R participants at the Tin Roof in Nashville at 6:30pm. There will be musical performances by several OSO Artists and friends. We encourage everyone in the Nashville area to come out to the Tin Roof this Friday, meet some honored veterans, and enjoy the wonderful talent of our service men and women.

Operation: Sound Off! Launches KickStarter.com Campain

Scotty Huff and Robert Reynolds, founders of Operation: Sound Off! (OSO), have launched a KickStarter.com campaign to generate funding for the project which provides music recording and performance opportunities to the men and women of the Armed Forces who have musical dreams they put on hold or set aside to serve our country.

OSO's 90 day campaign to raise $85,246.00 will fund the recording and filming expenses required to create a full produciton 5 song EP featuring the music of 5 military artists, a series of biographical video vignettes on each artist, broadcast quality music videos, and a "sizzle reel" for the intended episodic television production. KickStarter.com provides an online "all or nothing" funding platform that provides rewards for those contributing to the project. The rewards for pledging to OSO range from advance copies of the EP, tickets to concerts, a trip to Nashville, and a private "house concert" by an OSO artist.

"Elle Macho, people, ELLE MACHO!"

Ok, listen. First, bear with me on this post and understand that this is not the giddy rantings of some star-struck groupie. Please take this as coming from an experienced music industry veteran who has nothing to gain from this. It's important.

I saw Elle Macho last night at Nashville's famous 3rd & Lindsley as they performed a set for WRLT's Nashville Sunday Night. I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY! This quite possibly was the best show I've ever experienced. And, Elle Macho may be the best power pop band, ever! And I don't say that stuff lightly! Everything about Elle Macho is... well... perfect. There songs are intriguing, musical, and well crafted. They're 3 part vocal arrangements are spot on. The instrumental parts are perfectly placed and complimenting. Even their stage banter, including the way they "sold" their merch over the mic was brilliant. Elle Macho successfully combines musicality, energy, intelligence, fun, excitement, and plain ol' ROCK, all at once.
Let me introduce you:

I know drummer, Lindsay Jamieson, the least. He did some time with Ben Folds, and that's good enough for me! His parts were an equal musical component to everything else going on. Nothing was out of place. There was no simple meat-head beat keeping, unless meat-head beat keeping was the perfect thing to do at the time. Also, being a strong singer (which is a tall order when you're sharing the stage with vocal powerhouses David Mead and Butterfly Boucher) created huge dimention to the band.

Next is the brilliant and devastatingly talented, Butterfly Boucher. I've been amazed by Butterfly since I wore out her Flutterby solo album in 2003. Her writing, singing, and playing prowess was well demonstrated on that project since she basically did everything on it, save a few tidbits here and there. And once again she shines bright with Elle Macho, with her evident writing influence, her intense yet haunting vocals, and her mind boggling, hard-driving bass playing. Man! Her ability to soulfully deliver a perfect vocal while rocking a syncopated bass line that would have Sting scratching his head, was truly awe inspiring.

And last, but never least, my friend David Mead, who may be the most talented individuals I know. I feel David is one of the most underestimated, underappreciated, talents around. His breadth of vocal abilities are like having 4 other dudes in the band, yet they all blend with Butterfly beautifully. His guitar playing was spot on with amazing tone. He rocked without over powering the subtleties and filled the space where needed yet let the music breathe where appropriate. And, of course, he is one of my favorite songwriters. His grasp of the language is only rivaled by his perspective.

So, there it is. I am humbled. I am inspired. I am energized. I am hopeful.

Elle Macho, people, ELLE MACHO! Learn it. Live it. Love it!

Arranging And Trumpet Playing

Been a busy week of arranging and trumpet playing for Scotty. It started last week with a horn arrangment and horn session for the super talented, Melissa Fuller, produced by Grammy Award winner, Chad Carleson. "It was a really fun song," said Scotty. "It's not often, especially in Nashville, that you get to arrange a tune for Clarinet, Trumpet with Cup Mute, and Euphonium! It was like channeling the Sgt. Pepper sessions."

Then it was back in scoring mode for the 31st childrens animated film for Huff and his Artists4Artists collaborator, Robert Reynolds. "Yeah, we can't believe it's our 31st film. This one is called Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed, and it was written and directed by author and film maker, Mo Willems. Mo is one of our favorite authors/directors to work with. He's brilliant," offered Scotty.

Today, on a break from mixing Naked Mole Rat, Scotty popped over to House Of Blue Studios to record some trumpet with Saxophone and arranging guru, Jim Hoke, for a project produced by the famous, David Z. David has a long history as Prince's producer as well as producing the #1 hit, "She Drives Me Crazy", for The Fine Young Cannibals. He was also a member of Lipps, Inc... you remember... "Won't you take me to... Funkytown!"

"Nashville never ceases to amaze me. I have a nice little chat with Alison Krauss in the studio parking lot on my way in to do a session for David Z. Crazy. I love this town."

Brennin: Get Your Shades On, This Star Is About To Burn Bright

Brennin's talent was clear to me from the first time I heard him sing and play guitar. I was introduced to Brennin by a mutual friend, and his manager, Rikk Feulner, several years ago. We began to write songs together and I knew I was in the presence of a guy with a gift. His natural groove and melodic ideas were as compelling as those written by musicians twice his age. His instinct for what makes a song grab the listener is spot on.

I was soon asked to begin working with Brennin in the studio to produce what would eventually become his "Bring Back Tomorrow" album. It was during this process that I once again learned how amazing this artist is. Watching him create in the studio, chasing ideas, and delivering stellar performances was so much fun. It was inspiring to watch him grow over that six month period.

After the album was finished, I performed with Brennin in several of his live shows. Once again, I was pleasantly surprised with his command of the stage, his playing prowess, and his ability to get the best from his band.

So there I was, last friday night, at The Rutledge in Nashville, attending a Brennin show, and once again I was completely blown away with the unending forward momentum of this young dynamo! His new songs are great. His guitar playing was tasty and well planned. His stage presence was calm and in-control yet exciting and youthful. And then, to top it all off, he slides behind the piano like Paul-freakin-McCartney and knocks it out of the park!

What the future holds for Brennin is anyones guess, given the current state of the music industry. But I promise you, this kid has the potential to be among the legends of music that we all revere. Mark my words!

It was a big night at the Ryman Auditorium last night, as it hosted the Americana Music Awards, hosted by Jim Lauderdale. Many stars were participating or being honored including Sam Bush, Jack White, Patty Griffin, Rodney Crowell, and Lucinda Williams. The All-Star band, lead by Buddy Miller, included Sam Bush, Patty Griffin, and Don Was.

Scotty Huff (on trumpet) joined Jim Hoke (sax) and John Hinchey (trombone) in augmenting the house band for Wanda Jackson's rockin' performance of "Shakin' All Over" following receiving her lifetime achievement award. The night culminated in a power set by Robert Plant.

Well, the August voting period for the Pepsi Refresh campaign has come and gone. OSO finished 156th out of 1231 projects. Even though we didn't win, there was never a day where we didn't move up the chart. That can't happen unless people we voting. We want to thank everyone who took the time to vote. We also want to thank you for putting up with the constant emails, texts, Tweets, and Facebook reminders.

The best thing to come out of the Pepsi opportunity is the outreach we were able to accomplish. More people know about OSO than ever before and we want you to know that we are not going to slow down. Pepsi was an opportunity, but we never intended to hinge the future of the project on winning a Pepsi grant.

Operation: Sound Off! Is Getting There, But Needs A Boost

OSO founders, Scotty Huff and Robert Reynolds are very pleased with the response so far to their need for Pepsi Refresh votes. However, they fear their slow rise towards the #1 position is a bit too slow if they wish to reach the top by the end of the month.

Huff elaborated in a recent interview:

"We appreciate everyone who has been voting, especially those voting daily, for this wonderful project. We simply need to reach more people and encourage them to vote. We hope everyone understands how beneficial this project will be, not only to the military musicians we work with, but to everyone who experiences their music and their stories. There are many wonderful military causes that all deserve support, but very few of them are this far reaching. Just one song from a fellow Marine can be the inspiration for a wounded warrior to 'keep on' through their physical therapy. One song from a fellow soldier can be all that a victim of PTSD needs to hear to know he's not alone. The concert tours and the television production we're developing bring these stories and this music to the world, which will encourage more support of our brave men and women in uniform. And at the very least, it'll give these talented heroes a boost into a music career or simply a chance to leave the stress of their duties behind for a while and live a dream. I think they've earned that. But, like everything else, it takes money to do all this. This Pepsi Refresh Grant will be a real good start."

Operation: Sound Off! Hits The Press To Help Win Pepsi Refresh Grant

As the month of August rolls along, the founders of Operation: Sound Off! (OSO) are stepping up their campaign to encourage people to vote for OSO at www.refresheverything.com/operationsoundoff in order to win a $250K Pepsi Refresh Grant. Their application was approved by Pepsi on August 1st, and is now up for votes until the end of the month. Only the Top 2 contestants in the $250K category will be awarded the grant. OSO entered the competition with the ranking of 408th out of 1,231 projects in their category. As of this writing, they have moved up to 264th.

"We're very happy with our progress so far," say Scotty Huff, co-founder of OSO, "but we have a long way to go. We're trying everything to keep the momentum up and increase awareness without annoying people."

Operation: Sound Off! was created by Grammy Award winner, Robert Reynolds, and music producer/arranger, Scotty Huff, in an effort to give back to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. CMA Music Fest - Toby Keith Sessions - Frankie Ballard

Hey everyone,

It's been a while since I posted. I've been very busy for the last couple months. I thought I'd take a minute to give you a few highlights.

On the session front, I've been having a bunch of fun. I had a great time singing some harmonies and playing a little banjo for my friend John Lancaster's firs demo session as a songwriter for Wide Open Music. Of course, singing with his wife and hit songwriter Rachel Proctor is always a treat. And a few weeks earlier, I joined my horn player compadres Jim Hoke and Bill Huber in cutting a track for the new Toby Keith album. But the highlight came when I got to record with the honorable Bobby Keys. You know Bobby's saxophone work from Elvis' "Return To Sender" and of couse a long run (since the early 70's) with The Rolling Stones.

Nashville just settled down from it's infamous CMA Music Fest (formerly known as Fan Fair). I was quite busy with events for www.DigitalRodeo.com as well as a ton of performing. The performance highlight was with Warner Bros. recording artist Frankie Ballard. If you haven't checked Frankie out yet, you should!

Last Thursday I had the honor of performing with Sal Gonzalez at the Hard Rock Cafe in Nashville at an event to benefit the Families of Ft. Campbell and www.OperationTroopAid.org The other featured performers were Dustin Wilkes and John Carter. All three of these artists are veterans having served in Iraq. It's nice to see that three Marines are willing to support the Army. We are all on the same team after all!

Finally, I've done a small update to the www.OperationSoundOff.com website. We are still seeking sponsorships and/or investors to support this worthy cause. You can listen to Sal Gonzalez's tremendous song, "Heroes" on the home page. Check it out!

"Math Curse" wins Gold at Worldfest Houston

Chalk up three more awards for a films scored by Scotty Huff and Robert Reynolds of Artists4Artists Productions (A4A). "Math Curse" received a Gold Remi Award, and both "Knuffle Bunny Too" and "Gym Teacher From The Black Lagoon" took home Bronze Remi's.

Scotty and Robert have been composing and producing film scores since 1998. They recently completed their 30th film score with Weston Woods Studios.

Scotty Huff In The Recording Studio For A Jon Roniger Horn Tracking Session

Scotty will be in the recording studio today with fellow horn players Jim Hoke (sax) and Bill Huber (trombone) cutting horn tracks for Jon Roniger's upcoming new album. The two songs they will record are "My Favorite Bridge" and "Man And Guitar", which Scotty also did the arranging for.

"Jon writes great songs and has a great spirit, especially in the recording studio," commented Scotty. "He allows the musicians he works with to be themselves and let's them truly contribute to the tracks. Of course, that's how his producer, Jim Reilley, works as well. It's always a pleasure."

Jon Roniger

Nashville singer/songwriter and recording artist, Jon Roniger, is once again in the studio working on a new project. If you're not aware of Jon, check out his cool music at http://www.jonroniger.com/. Scotty is currently working on some horn section arrangements for this new project.

Scotty worked on Jon's first Nashville album, A Charmed Life, with his arranging and trumpet playing chops for Jon's song "Believe". "This new project is yet another great bunch of songs by Jon. I really love his stuff and I'm happy to be a part of it", Scotty says.

30th Children's Film Score

It's hard for me to even imagine. My friend/collaborator, Robert Reynolds, and I are in the studio over the next couple of days finishing up the production of our 29th and 30th film scores for Weston Woods Studios (a division of Scholastic). The films this week include "Splat The Cat", by Rob Scotton, and "The Pigeon Finds A Hot Dog", by one of our favorite authors/illustrators, Mo Willems.

Our relationship with Weston Woods Studios (WWS) started back in 1998 while on tour with The Mavericks. WWS director of production, Paul Gagne, has long been a Mav's fan. After meeting him at a show, he explained how WWS animates children's books into short films and asked us if we'd be interested in composing the musical score to a film. Of course we jumped at the opportunity. What we thought was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to score a film turned into collaboration that has lasted 12 years and is going strong.

We've had the pleasure of creating the music to some wonderful films, including: "Miss Nelson Has A Field Day", "Antarctic Antics", "Swamp Angel", and "So You Want To Be President". It's an extra bonus that we've been able to work on these projects with some celebrities like Cindy Lauper ("There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly"), Randy Travis ("Click Clack Moo", "Giggle Giggle Quack", & "Duck For President"), and James Earl Jones ("John, Paul, George, & Ben"), to name only a few.

WWS and Paul Gagne have a long history of producing award winning children's films. I'm proud to say that six of our films have won the prestigious Andrew Carnegie Medal from the American Library Association. Our Carnegie Medal winners are: "Miss Nelson Has A Field Day", "Antarctic Antics", "So You Want To Be President", "Giggle Giggle Quack", "Knuffle Bunny", and "Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus". The last two were also written and illustrated by Mo Willems.

These films prove to be some of the most fun, creative, challenging, and rewarding projects that I do. I'm honored to work with all the talented musicians that have joined us on these projects. And I'm especially honored to work with my long-time friend and co-producer, Robert Reynolds. These last 12 years have seemingly flown by. And I'm ready to let the next 12 whizz by with more films with Paul and the gang at Weston Woods Studios!!!

Dr. Boyle, I Presume?

I'm so excited for and proud of my best pal, Rob Boyle, for earning his PhD today (can't remember in what though... duh!). Rob is the Manager of Service Leadership at the John Cook School of Business at St. Louis University.

Rob and I grew up together in Millinocket, Maine. I met Rob when we were in the 4th grade, and were pretty much best buds since senior year in high school. We attended the University of Southern Maine (USM) together and performed music in several groups, including our acoustic trio, Chronicle, with the talented Scott Furrow. After USM, Rob went on to higher learning which moved him around the Midwest where he landed in St. Louis. (And I happened to land in Nashville, 5 hours away... weird) He has a lovely wife and two beautiful twin daughters.

Anyway, he's worked very hard and deserves all the accolades! Congratulations, bro!

CRS 2010

Once again, this years Grand Finale show capping of this years week of Country Radio Seminar (CRS) in Nashville was a huge success. The show, organized by DigitalRodeo.com and The Country Radio Broadcasters (CRB), featured 20 artists at all levels of their career. Music industry pro's were entertained by veteran acts like Bryan White and Sammy Kershaw, current favorites like Emily West and Julie Roberts, and "up and commers" like the Lo Cash Cowboys and Mallary Hope.

The theme this year was "Guilty Pleasures", you know those songs you love but don't want anyone to know about it. ;-) There were a few songs that didn't really fit the category, but in my oppinion, the winner in terms of song selection was Burns & Poe who performed "Down Under" by Men At Work.

I had the pleasure, once again, of being the music director for the show. The band I put together was stellar! (and they're a great bunch of guys, too!) We had Grammy Award winning drummer Paul Deakin (The Mavericks), the impecable Dave Roe (Johnny Cash, Dwight Yokam) on bass, Rob McNelley on guitar (whom you've heard all over Lady Antebellum's recordings including all the sweet slide guitar stuff on their "Need You Now" single), top call keyboard player Steve King (Keith Urban), and the multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist Jim Hoke on sax, flute, steel guitar, harmonica, and jaw harp (you've heard Jim's harmonica on Jamie O'Neal's "There Is No Arizona"). And once again, Matt and Brad from the great trio, Due West, provided our harmony vocals.

Johnny Henry

I just finished up an EP project with Johnny Henry. Johnny is a talented buddy of mine from St. Louis and I think you're gonna love his voice and these songs. I'm sitting at Independent Mastering as I type this while Eric is mastering these tracks. They really sound great! The EP (as of now) will be titled "Now". The first single is a song called "Old Fashioned Girl". This song is a fun modern country tune with a bit of a "down home" flavor. The title track, "Now", is a straight up pop-country smash! "So Much" is a super soulful love song "for all the ladies out there...!" The fun and bouncy track, "The Way It Is", is a plea to get back to the heart of our relationships. And finally, "Waiting On The Rain" is a lush reminder to enjoy life amid all the stress of the world.

We recorded five songs over the past couple weeks at 16 Ton Studios here in Nashville. Patrick Miller was lead engineer with Mike Esser assisting. Of course 16 Ton intern Ryan Waniata was a huge help to us. You'll find some usual suspects performing on the tracks like, Tim Horsley (drums), Steve King (keys & accordion), and Mike Daly (steel guitar & dobro). You'll also enjoy some newer names (well not new, but new to my productions) like Robbie Emerson (bass), JD Simo (guitar), Jimmy Herman (fiddle), and Jaime Hanna (harmony vox). I'm also happy to have Carol Rabinowitz (cello), Conni Ellisor (violin), Catherine Umstead (violin), and Betsy Lamb (viola) grace this project from the Nashville Symphony. And last, but not least, the amazing talents of Rachel Proctor (vocals) and Jason Mowery (fiddle & mandolin) gave us just the right magic fairy dust to perfect everything! :-)

Like I mentioned before, the EP is getting mastered as I type, so it may be a few days before they are available for download. Season's Greetings!

Greetings all! I hope this message finds you well and in the midst of
a wonderful holiday season.

Ok, so I know I don't post much to this blog. It's not for a lack of
want, it's just a something I haven't built a habit around. This
year, however, I'm going to try to make a real attempt at it.

2009 was a bittersweet year for me. I completed many great projects
including custom albums for "Brennin" and child sensation "Kaitlyn
Maher". However, the loss of my Mom in August, blessedly ended her
long struggle with cancer, but began my families life without her.
Yet, we all have bright smiles as we look to the future with wonderful
thoughts of the past. Thanks to all of you for your support.

There is much on my plate for 2010, and I'm excited to share it with
you all. I have several production & development projects in the
works including "Johnny Henry", "The Twisselman Sisters", and "Watson
& Nash".

The biggest project is "Operation: Sound Off (OSO)". OSO is a project
created by Robert Reynolds and myself to give special musical
opportunities to members of our armed forces.

I'll also be doing more specialty work for DigitalRodeo.com, including
directing their Neighborly Rewards program.

It's a big week here in Nashville. It's CMA Music Fest week (Formerly known as Fan Fair). Country music fans from all over the globe descend upon Music City to get up close and personal with their favorite country music stars.

I will be doing some free-lance coverage for DigitalRodeo.com. I'll be producing features for several fan club parties for artists including Little Big Town, Jake Owen, and Sara Evans. I will also be combing the crowds in 'Search for the Superfan'. The winner of the 'Superfan' contest will win a trip to see their favorite country artist in concert!

Hey all,

Just want to update you on my project with Brennin. We finished the last of the recording this past week and it is sounding GREAT!! We are very excited to get it mixed, which is happening the first 2 weeks of April.

I want to thank everyone who worked on this project, namely Brennin (of course), engineer Mike Esser at 16 Ton Studios in Nashville, and all of the musicians that graced us with their talent. This will be a life changing project for many people.

I want to make special mention of Kendra Chantelle, who not only sang like an angel on Brennin's project, but also co-wrote a great duet with Brennin which will be featured on the album. I recommend everyone keep a close watch on the career of Kendra Chantelle. You won't be disappointed.

State Of The Industry

Sure, it's easy to sit back like a Monday morning quarterback and lament about the state of the music industry. There are many caught in suspended animation while awaiting the inevitable axe to fall upon them. We can scrutinize in great detail the falling number of CD sales, the increase in file sharing and digital downloads, and the overall reduction of music related revenue.

But I am a reasonable man. I prefer to look at the evidence in pursuit of the truth. Here is what I've observed and/or learned:

Music has been around since the very dawn of humanity... maybe even before!
Music has survived famine, plague, pestulence, world war, recession, holocaust, fad, and ADHD.
From the moment I became interested in music, there have been an endless stream of people (mostly fellow musicians) who were constantly at the ready to complain about how bad things are.
I've been a musician for over 30 years and music is still composed, arranged, performed, recorded, listened to, and purchased.

Thus, here is what I've deduced:

Music will continue to be composed
Music will continue to be arranged
Music will continue to be performed
Music will continue to be recorded
Music will continue to be listened to
Music will continue to be purchased
Music will continue...

Now, all that said, it may be true that we must be willing to change our notions of the industry in terms of monetization, but this in no way is a sign of doom and disaster. On the contrary, it is merely a sign of change. In fact, I see it as a time of rebirth and a sign of great things to come.

I, for one, refuse to be sucked into the undertow of negativity that seems to surround me. I shall ride the wave of optimism and "hang ten" past those that succumb to the deluge.

So Much to Say... So Little Time...

I've been wanting to post to my blog since Christmas time to wish everyone good tidings. I thought about it again at the top of 2009 to spread cheer for the new year. I wanted to share with the world my new found commitment to face my sugar addiction and the interest in the writings of Thomas Paine. The reality is, however, I've had no time to hardly breathe.

As we see over and over again in our society, I too am struggling in this current economy. I am surviving. I am fighting the good fight. And I will prevail. However, I must admit that often the stress of it becomes quite daunting, even for this "glass is half full" guy.

Today, however, I am encouraged. We inaugurated our 44th President today. And regardless of your political persuation - I happen to be a staunch INDEPENDENT - today's historical event has set in motion the true possibility of change.

Now, I am one of those guys, unfortunately, who has grown so weary and sceptical of any politician that I dare not believe anything that oozes from their mouths. We've heard talk of "it's time for change" for as long as I remember. We've been glazed over with the promise of "bi-partisan" efforts and the need to "reach across the isle". And though I STILL believe that it is all talk, even for Mr. Obama, I can't help but feel an optimism from the entire world.

Optimism!

We haven't seen this level of optimism and hope since the 50's. I really feel in my soul that not only America, but the entire globe is anticipating great things. This is all positive energy. It is all good will. It defines good tidings. And this could very well tip the first domino that sets off a flourish of truly wonderful things.

I believe it's possible.

So today, I pause from my own crisis and despair to send my congratulatory good tidings to the Obama's and to the whole of mankind. I hope to be one of countless dominos all tipping towards better days.

Key West Again

Hey everybody,

Many of you know that I occasionally go down to Key West to play the Hogs Breath Saloon. I usually go with Paul Deakin (The Mavericks) along with an assortment of other talented people. It seems this year was an exceptional year. Not only will this be the fifth time I've been down, but it appears a trend is being set with band members.

I've had the pleasure of performing with Paul Deakin; drummer for one of my favorite groups of all time The Mavericks, but two of my songwriting/artist idols has been rounding out the band in Key West. David Mead and Jason White have become the other half of the band with Paul and me. This will be the third time this year that Fanny Pack will appear at the Hogs Breath in Key West. We start tomorrow, Monday Dec.8th and play through Sunday, Dec. 14th. For those of you in the area, c'mon down. For those who aren't, check out the Stage Cam at Hogsbreath.com. Of course, I recommend joining us later in the week, as the only time we play together is in the Keys. We're usually a bit rusty the first couple nights! :-)

I hope everybody has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Welcome to my blog. I've never been much of a blogger but I've decided to step it up a notch. As you have noticed I've upgraded my website and I'm making new strides everyday.

A lot has happened in the last year. I've retired myself from full-time touring to focus on my family and a new phase of my career. I've been very fortunate to have toured the world with some of the best artists in Nashville. Those experiences were very special and I definately appreciate the opportunities I've had. However, being away from Nashville that much makes it impossible to build any other future. My songwriting, producing, and arranging business has not grown, and those are the things I was really meant to do. And of course, these endeavors also allow me to be home with my family. In fact, my son is sitting on my lap as I type this. What other job lets you do that?! :-)

This year has been a real eye opener for me. I've started producing Brennin Hunt and have several other projects looming on the horizon. I've also started producing Internet content like the In The Round/On The Row show which will debut on DigitalRodeo.com soon.

I'm excited for what the new year will bring. Even with the economic stresses we're all facing, I feel 2009 will be a great year for all of us.
